Harmonic distortion is a measure of non-linear harmonic distortion and is expressed as a percentage. Non-linear harmonic distortion is signals that were not present in the original before the signal was converted by the headphones. These unwanted signals are caused by the diaphragm, whose movements are not simultaneous with the electrical signals. Unfortunately, this is a feature of all electroacoustic transducers. Although it cannot be completely eliminated, appropriate measures can be taken to minimize it. However, the user is not interested in why this distortion occurs, but rather how great the degree of distortion must be in order to become perceptible. According to the results of several research projects, a harmonic distortion factor of 1% is imperceptible in the frequency range from 1 to 200 Hz. Below 100 Hz, the perceptibility threshold is 10%.
